The village is never what it seems. We called it “B&B del Castello”.
Everybody calls it “del Castello”: friends, relatives, householders, tourists and our local policeman.
The street sign where this house is located says “Vico del Castello”, “Via Castello” is the street reaching the lower end of the village and this district is called “il Castello”, but there is no Castle.
You can see the fascination and mystery of this village: I live at “il Castello”, but there is no Castle. You can see the difference between places who owe their names to bureaucracy and places who are really lived by their people.
Pennapiedimonte is different: the official and the real village do not correspond.
The curiosity of all people who come here springs from this: they look for a Castle
(a medieval building in their imagination), but discover in surprise that “il Castello” is only the name of the district.
At first they are disappointed for a little moment, but then they are soon enchanted by the setting opening
before their eyes: from one side a panoramic view reaching the Adriatic Sea
and from the other a spectacular mountain surmounted by a very blue sky.
THE SAME VIEW WE MIGHT SEE FROM THE TOWER OF A HYPOTHETICAL DEFENSIVE CASTLE.
